Hi everyone. It is too early in the podcast for me to have a Halloween themed episode (as far as I know, Neanderthals were the first human species to develop burial practices, and that isn’t for a few more episodes). So, I thought I’d share with you what I listened to today on my commute: At The Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft. I’m listening to an excellent version you can download for free (Uvula Audio) and I’m really enjoying it. If you have an audible subscription, they have a daily deal for the story for $1.95 (a different recording) or with 1 credit. If you don’t have an audible subscription, you can get the At the Mountains of Madness with a free trial by visiting this link (via Ryan of The History of Ancient Greece): www.audible.com/ancientgreece.
Also, if you’re curious about the antiquated paleontology/geology in Lovecraft’s story, give a listen to an excellent book called The Dragon Seekers about the origins of paleontology. In The Dragon Seekers, Christopher McGowan relates the real and startling discovery of the dinosaurs which provided fodder for Lovecraft’s masterful tale (also from Audible and possible with a free trial).
Ryan does have a Halloween themed episode on the Underworld. Give it a listen (here)!
